Eye examinations, eyeglass or contact lens fittings and treatment of visual impairments can be difficult and stressful for children. Our doctors are specially trained to care for younger patients. It takes extra time, special equipment, and a love of little children. Visual examinations are very important during the early stages of development and can prevent many future problems. The doctors at Academy Eye Associates are experienced in recognizing and treating the early onset of all vision problems and can often offer preventive care to avoid future difficulties. The friendly and caring staff at our clinics will put your child at ease and allow them to feel comfortable and secure during what is often an uncomfortable experience.
Dr. Henry Greene at the Academy Road location specializes in evaluating special needs children and collaborates with the Pediatrics Department at Duke University Medical Center to see children with high risk medical disorders including Hurler’s Disease, Krabbe Disease, Adrenoleukodystrophy, Tay Sachs as well as many other MPS and genetic disorders. He uses special examination equipment – rarely available in most eye care offices – especially for children, some imported from Germany, to carefully follow and treat the potentially vision threatening disorders. These include the PlusOptics Infra–red stereo–optometer, one of only 10 in the US, and the Sweep VEP which uses electrodes attached to the head to measure brain waves to detect vision problems in young children. Dr. Greene has evaluated hundreds of at–risk young children and has developed very specialized techniques and treatment methods to follow their very special needs. Our optical shops offer a wide variety of high–quality and fashionable frames that your child will love. You will appreciate the respect and caring treatment that your child will receive at any one of our locations. Remember, your child should be examined by six months of age and again at three years. Between the ages of six and eighteen years, we should see your child before beginning first grade, and every two years thereafter. We look forward to providing your child with a bright future and you with the confidence that you are doing everything possible to insure your child’s healthy development.
