Eat Fish, Lower Risk of Age-related Eye Disease

Entry Date: 7/24/2010

A recent study published in the journal Ophthalmology sought to determine the relationship between fish and shellfish consumption and AMD status in the Salisbury Eye Evaluation (SEE) Study participants. A food frequency questionnaire was used to estimate weekly fish/shellfish consumption for each of the randomly selected 2,520 Maryland residents aged 65 to 84 years included in this cross-sectional study. AMD status was determined from fundus photographs and the association between the two was investigated using logistic regression while adjusting for risk factors and correlation between eyes. It was determined that those with advanced AMD were significantly less likely to consume fish/shellfish high in omega-3 fatty acids. The study data support a protective effect of fish/shellfish intake against advanced AMD.
